Carnaval, Samba, and Memphis Depay

Carnaval, Samba, and Memphis Depay

Carnaval, Samba, and Memphis Depay

When he started his career, many thought that Memphis Depay would be a legitimate candidate for the Ballon d’Or in a few years.

Back then, people talked about his temperament. And although he was able to impress at every club, he never showed that he had the capacity for the greatest feats. After United, he had to step back and go to Lyon; after Barcelona, he went to Atletico for a paltry 4,000,000 euros, and now – he is leaving Madrid.

The summer before his contract expired, the now 30-year-old Dutchman announced that he was leaving Atletico, for whom he played 31 games last season, but in competition with Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata, only 12 in the starting lineup. He scored nine goals. And he realized that he would have to take another step back.

From time to time, in the Amazon rainforest, but also along the Brazilian coast, “bombs” can be heard.

Corinthians detonated a bomb, completing a big deal – signing Memphis Depay! The Dutch striker got the terms he had hoped for. He boxed out a salary of 70,000,000 Brazilian reals, which comes to around 11,000,000 euros, and a contract for 28 months, or until the end of 2026.

And most importantly, he will not suffer the consequences. He is not on Ronald Koeman’s blacklist and still is and will be part of the Netherlands national team.

Memphis Depay was on the list for the European Championship, but upon his return from the same, he was left without a club.

He parted ways with Atletico Madrid and pondered for a long time, which influenced Ronald Koeman not to call him up for the Nations League matches. You don’t have a club – you can’t play for the national team. He is neither the first nor the last to think like that. But what was far more dangerous for Memphis Depay was that the Dutch coach decided to close the doors of the national team to players who play outside of Europe.

Admittedly, not for everyone. One rule applies to those in Saudi Arabia and another to everyone else.

Memphis Depay arrived at Corinthians. He was welcomed as a hero, a savior at the most popular club in Sao Paulo. Unexpectedly, there was no place for the former Atletico Madrid striker at any of the European clubs, so he headed to Brazil, where players usually come to Europe. Lately, footballers from the Old Continent have been coming to the country of football more and more often.

He will be another in a series of stars who will play in the country of the five-time world champion.

Felipe Coutinho, Dimitri Payet, Marcelo, David Luiz, Felipe Anderson, Lucas Moura, Thiago Silva, Alex Sandro, and Martin Braithwaite are just a few whose moves are currently making fans across Brazil’s adrenaline rush.
