Eredivisie – The Drama

Eredivisie – The Drama

Unreal scenes in Holland, madness like no other in recent football history!

The night of May 14, 2025, will be remembered as the night when Ajax suffered a historic collapse in Groningen, and when, it will be known in four days, they probably lost their long-awaited Dutch championship title.

Francesco Farioli’s team should have won to enter the final round with a point more than PSV, and to celebrate their 37th national championship title with the energy of the Johan Cruyff Arena against Twente.

Still, the Pride of the North was beaten!

They did not lower their heads before the giant and mortally wounded him in the 99th minute of the match, 2:2.

At the end of April, no one asked who would be the new Eredivisie champion.

Ajax had nine points in excess, advanced algorithms gave PSV only an eight percent chance on April 30, and then the collapse of the most trophy-winning Dutch club occurred.

It was certainly one of the most harrowing games Ajax fans have ever experienced.

PSV had already demolished Heracles (4:0, eventually 4:1) at half-time, and the Amsterdamers knew their team had to win. They had a breath of peace thanks to Gaei’s goal in the 27th minute, but in the second half of the game, they started to shiver, from head to toe.

If they could, they would have jumped out of their skin when Tom Van Bergen equalized in the 52nd minute, and they were not at ease in their bodies when the wildcard Wout Weghorst returned Ajax to the leading position in the live table in the 76th minute.

It was clear that Farioli’s young men did not have the strength to secure victory, but that they would only leave Groningen triumphantly if they defended. They may have been spared a bullet after Luciano Valente’s shot in the 79th minute when the ball hit the post, but fear paralyzed them in deep stoppage time, officially timed to six minutes.

A flurry of sharp starts and a fire on the pitch extended the referee’s stoppage time, and Ajax were awarded a penalty in the 99th minute. Despair was visible on Veghhorst’s face after he, like goalkeeper Remko Pasver, missed the ball and allowed Thijmen Blokzijl to score from half a meter.

The team’s fans from Eindhoven stayed after the match to see off the green and whites’ goal and Ajax’s collapse, which was unprecedented in this century.

No one has extinguished themselves like the giants from Amsterdam, on their way to becoming the season’s losers on the Old Continent.

Francesco Farioli managed to do just that.

After a disappointing 2-2 draw away to Groningen and a drop to second place in the Eredivisie table, the Italian tried to explain to the fans of the Dutch giants that they should be happy!?

He is talking about a dismissal and will get it, combining unworthy words and modest results.

It will not help. The headache is huge.

It will not stop so easily, because the club from the Johan Cruyff Arena was seen as the first to cross the finish line, but was first defeated by Utrecht, then played 1-1 at home with Sparta Rotterdam, then lost to NEC, and on Wednesday evening.

Even though until the ninth minute of injury time they had the advantage at Euroborg, they brought only a point to Amsterdam and allowed PSV to overtake them in the table with a convincing victory over Heracles with one round to go.

Ajax earned a place in the Champions League as a consolation.

Feyenoord will go to the qualifiers, as was known before, and Utrecht will go to the Europa League with the Go Ahead Eagles Cup winners.

A play-off will decide the places in the Conference League between AZ Alkmaar, Twente, NEC, and Heerenveen.
