Germany Crushes Scotland In Euro 2024 Opener!

Germany started their home European Championship campaign strongly, thrashing Scotland 5-1 in the tournament’s opening match, which is part of Group A.

The German team took the lead in the 10th minute when Joshua Kimmich sent a low pass from the right to Florian Wirtz, who scored after the ball hit the right post and went into the Scots’ net. Nine minutes later, Kai Havertz received the ball in the penalty area and passed to Jamal Musiala, who powerfully struck with his right foot to score Germany’s second goal. In the added time of the first half, Kai Havertz made it 3-0 by converting a penalty awarded for a harsh foul by Ryan Porteous on Ilkay Gundogan, for which the Scotsman was sent off with a direct red card.

Substitute Niclas Füllkrug scored Germany’s fourth goal in the 68th minute, sending the ball into the top left corner after a pass from Gundogan. Three minutes before regular time ended, Scott McKenna attempted a header, which deflected off Antonio Rüdiger and entered the Germans’ net. In added time, Emre Can skillfully struck from the edge of the penalty area, sending the ball into the bottom left corner to finalize the 5-1 result.

Germany – Scotland 5:1

1:0 Florian Wirtz (10′), 2:0 Jamal Musiala (19′), 3:0 Kai Havertz (45’+1′) pen., 4:0 Niclas Füllkrug (68′), 4:1 Antonio Rüdiger (87′) own goal, 5:1 Emre Can (90’+3′)

Red card: Ryan Porteous (Scotland)

Germany started the match with pressure. In the 55th second, Florian Wirtz shot after a through pass from Antonio RĂĽdiger, but Angus Gunn saved it, though it was offside.

The German team continued to hold the ball for longer periods, but Scotland defended well enough.

In the 10th minute, however, the Scots’ defense faltered. Toni Kroos found Joshua Kimmich on the right flank. The Bayern Munich player saw Florian Wirtz cutting between the lines and made a great ground pass to the young German star. The offensive player struck immediately from outside the penalty area.

Although Angus Gunn touched the ball, it wasn’t enough to prevent it from hitting the right post and going in – 1:0 for Germany, with Florian Wirtz scoring the first goal of the 2024 European Championship!

The momentum from the first goal spurred the Germans on, who continued to press the visitors.

In the 19th minute, captain Ilkay Gundogan “sliced” through the Scottish defense and set Kai Havertz free on the right wing. He held the ball and then passed slightly back to Jamal Musiala. The creative player made good body movements to create space for a shot.

Musiala unleashed a powerful shot from ten meters, leaving Gunn with no chance, and the German fans at the “Allianz Arena” cheered again – 2:0 for Germany!

The second goal demoralized Scotland, whose play became increasingly erratic. In the 24th minute, Musiala received the ball at the edge of the penalty area and drove inside. He was fouled by Ryan Christie, and referee Clement Turpin awarded a penalty to Germany! VAR intervened, however, determining the foul was just outside the area.

Kai Havertz stood behind the ball and managed to send it through the wall, but Angus Gunn made a life-saving intervention.

Gradually, Scotland managed to break free from Germany’s grip and tried to attack Manuel Neuer’s goal, who, however, had no work to do.

Germany nearly extended their lead three minutes before halftime.

Kimmich crossed from the right, Gundogan headed the ball, and Gunn saved. However, Ryan Porteous harshly struck Gundogan and collapsed to the ground. Meanwhile, the ball reached Toni Kroos, but his shot was blocked.

Following medical attention for both players, the referee reviewed the incident and awarded Germany a penalty.

Porteous was sent off with a direct red card. Kai Havertz took the penalty and, in the first minute of added time in the first half, coolly sent the ball into the center of the goal while the goalkeeper jumped to the left—3:0 for Germany!

Until the end of the half, Julian Nagelsmann’s team calmly held their lead and went into halftime with a significant advantage and an extra man on the field.

The second half in Munich began with a calmer pace, but Germany remained the aggressors in attack.

In the 58th minute, Toni Kroos crossed into the penalty area. The ball reached Wirtz, who was on the left side of the goal area and shot, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out.

Five minutes later, substitutes Niclas Füllkrug and Leroy Sane combined during a counterattack, but the winger’s shot was extremely weak, and Gunn saved.

The Borussia Dortmund striker showed the Bayern Munich winger how to score. Receiving the ball from Ilkay Gundogan in the penalty area, he shot 110 km/h with his right foot and sent the ball unstoppably into the top left corner of the Scots’ goal for 4:0!

In the 76th minute, the Dortmund striker made fun of the Scottish defense, scoring his second goal in the match, but it was offside, and the goal was not counted.

Ten minutes later, Leroy Sane’s shot from outside the penalty area flew high over the goal.

Instead, Scotland reached a consolation goal. In the 87th minute, Scotland took a free kick, with the ball reaching Scott McKenna on the left side of the goal. He played it with his head, and then the ball deflected off Antonio Rüdiger and went into the German net – an own goal, making the score 4:1.

However, that was not all, and Germany scored a fifth goal.

It came in the third minute of added time when Germany played the ball well, which reached Emre Can on the edge of the penalty area after a pass from Thomas MĂĽller. He did not hesitate and, with a precise shot, sent the ball into the bottom left corner, setting the final score at 5:1 for Germany in the first Euro 2024 match!
