Portuguese Coach? Is that the new trend?

Portuguese Coach? Is that the new trend?

For decades, Portugal has been considered one of the biggest exporters of super-talented football players.

And if you’ve been wondering where that came from, this article may shed some light on the mystery.

The Portuguese have the best managers on the planet. How else can we explain that as many as four of them are currently in the best football league in the world, the English Premier League?

After all, remember the last time coaches from one country dominated so much, not only in England or Europe but the whole world.

We didn’t succeed. At the same time, Nuno Espirito Santo is doing an excellent job in Nottingham Forest, and Jose Mourinho is doing well in Turkey managing Fenerbahce.

Of course, the new Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, is the most popular. Portuguese managers are dominating in South America as well, as in the last six years, Copa Libertadores was won by a team led by a Portuguese manager, Jorge Jesus (Flamengo) 2019, Abel Ferreira (Palmeiras), 2020, 2021 and Artur Jorge (Botafogo) 2024.

And not so long ago, until about 20 years ago, Portuguese clubs competed to see who would first bring a foreigner as head coach.

They came and went like at a train station. When the teams opted for local experts, they mostly had to be coaches with impressive playing careers.

Then Carlos Qeiroz, Mourinho, Viljas-Boas, Ruben Amorim,… appeared… Confidence in the profession returned.

All were educated at universities, studious, meticulous, and eloquent. Educational institutions in Portugal have long since perfected programs for creating quality coaches, and the Football Association of Portugal reluctantly invested in courses and seminars. And the results arrived soon.

Ruben Amorim might have taken Mourinho from the front pages, but “The Special One” will be remembered and written in football history as one of the best and greatest managers of all time. On the other hand, Amorim proved himself in Portugal, making them one of the most successful and dominant teams in Europe, but he still has to show a lot more on the big scene at Manchester United.

And maybe only because Manchester United is one of the most popular teams on the planet, the amazing work other Portuguese managers do is less appreciated. Nuno Espirito Santo, against all odds, keeps Nottingham Forest in the top 4, while Marco Silva keeps Fulham far away from the dangerous zone, up in the middle of the table.

Interestingly, all these successful Portuguese football managers had mediocre or no professional football careers.

Still, their knowledge and passion for this game can’t be compared with any other, and that, alongside investing in Academia for football managers, are the main reasons why they are one of the most dominant countries when it comes to football managers.

Portugal has the best coaches in the world!

They know exactly how to strategically position their teams in different countries, in different competitions, and under different circumstances.
